On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of Lamar University, I welcome your interest in the College of Engineering. The College has five academic departments: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering,Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees are offered in each of the five departments.

We currently have 58 full-time faculty members,1360 undergraduate students, 635 masters’ students and 80 doctoral students. Lamar University, College of Engineering is a place for a special kind of engineer – someone who wants to make a difference to society.

College of Engineering students have numerous employment opportunities during and after graduation our education and internship program.  Payscale.com ranked Lamar University 11th nationwide for return on investment for engineering majors and ranked 3rd among all public institutions. Our faculty members continue to strive for academic excellence.

Our research expenditures average $2.5 million a year. Many of our projects are associated with the Texas Air Research Center, Texas Hazardous Waste Center and the Center for Advances in the Study of Port Management. Some of our recent projects include:
  • Brick production from local soil and mechanical brick press that can be sent to third world countries with little to no materials.
  • Using a 3D printer to help to design prosthesis that can improve the lives of people with disabilities.
  • Development of a special device to assist law enforcement in verifying proper permitting of trucking as well as oversize/overweight loads on Texas roads.
  • Development of catalyst materials for converting carbon dioxide to useful fuels and chemicals using ultra violet and visible light.
  • Study of the utility factors of plug-in electric vehicles based on the longitudinal travel data collected by in-vehicle GPS device
Research funding sources include the National Science Foundation, the State of Texas and engineering companies in the Eastern Texas area. The office of Outreach and Student services assists the community by providing outreach and enrichment opportunities. Each year the college hosts 50-100, 7th – 11th grade students through our Lamar Introduction to Engineering (L.I.T.E.) and CHEM-E 101 summer programs.
Participants get the opportunity to engage in fun and exciting experiments while being introduced to the different fields of engineering.
We offer the opportunities and attention of a private university at the expense of a public institution.
Our motto is " Imagine it. Design it. Build it. Improve it. "Come join a program whose goal is to help you as an individual achieve career dreams and aspirations.
